A sad note from Doug Collyer

Dear Friends:

 It is with great sadness that I announce that Irene’s cancer returned in spite of the hopeful prognosis of the cancer treatment team.  She has lost her battle with the disease.  Irene passed peacefully Saturday at 4:08pm in our home and in the arms of myself and her two God children that loved her so much.  Gaby from Germany and Cindy from Dallas were a God sent to me.

 

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers over these past few months.  They were a great comfort for Irene and myself.

Clarification of earlier letter/email about the upcoming reunion--9-13 & 14

We understand that some classmates are unhappy that we said this is the final organized reunion in the letters and emails that classmates received.   What we should have said, is that this is the last class of 58 reunion that will be initiated and organized by Sandy and Jan.  Sandy has been a part of organizing all the past reunions, and Jan took Nancy Mayer Grau's role when Nancy died.  Thanks to Sandy for being a 55 year trooper!!

If someone in the class wants other organized reunions, we encourage others to step forward to initiate and organize another reunion.

Hi Classmates & Friends,

 

We just learned that Irene (my wife) has a non-small cell cancerous tumor located at the inverted Y of the Bronchial Tubes.  It is damaging the left bronchial tube and starting to squeeze the other bronchial tube as well.  By its location, so compressed into the area between the throat, heart & lungs they can't operate.  However they believe she is strong enough and in good enough health to tolerate Chemo and Radiation therapy at the same time (let's hope so).  These procedures start next week and will last six weeks.  Then we'll see where she is at and what more treatment she will need.  Of course she will be monitored all the way.

 

Her treatment is at/through Scott & White Hospital in Temple although the specific routine treatments of Chemo and Radiation will be here on an out-patient basis at their Cancer Treatment Center here in Killeen.  Scott and White Hospital has the reputation as the "Mayo Clinic" hospital of the southwest -- so she is in good hands.  We have been delightfully surprised and pleased with their amazing speed in scheduling tests and exams and the coordination between the teams of doctors on her case.

 

Irene is at home and doing the things she normally does, but is more tired than usual.

To the members of Chelsea High School's Class of 1958--

The fifty-fifth class reunion will be held on Friday and Saturday, September 13-14^th, 2013, to remember our time together at Chelsea High School. Activities planned are attendance of the football game on Friday night beginning at 7 pm and followed with a “sloppy joe” gathering at the home of Jim Grau at 737 South Main Street.

Beginning at noon on Saturday, we will share beverages and food at the American Legion Hall at 1700 Ridge Road on Cavanaugh Lake. We plan to eat about 2 pm but come early and stay long! We are spending our coffers out, so there will be very minimal charge—if any—for this final, organized reunion.

Some have expressed a desire to go out to a restaurant on Saturday evening, and that option is available at their own expense. However, others may wish to stay and enjoy a second helping for an evening meal!

Many changes have taken place in downtown Chelsea within the last five years as it continues to develop into a destination. We hope to have a map with the location of the new businesses to guide you around town and an opportunity for you to remember what was there while we were in high school. Our hospital has expanded, and a brewery, Chelsea Alehouse, opened this past fall!

If you have pictures that you would like to share with others, please send them to Lois Schiller Mitchell at 6655 Jackson Road #590, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48103 by August 15^th. Lois will scan them for a “picture show” of the old times. They will be returned to you at the reunion.

Bill Sorensen has four rooms reserved under his name at the Holiday Inn Express on Friday and Saturday at $115. per night for those who may want a reservation. We suggest booking early. The Inn is located at 1154 Commerce Park Drive, and the telephone for reservations is 734 433 1600.

Our condolences

Silas Hopkins' mother passed away yesterday, April 30, in Chelsea at the age of 97.   Silas took loving care of her for many years.  We know he will miss her, and send our deepest sympathies.

Status of Planning for 55th Class Reunion

There will be a meeting to help plan for the 55th class reunion on Thursday, April 18th, 1 pm, at Thompson's Pizza.   However, if you cannot make the meeting, please post your ideas for consideration here before the meeting.  Or, call Sandy Weber at 734 475 8862 or Jan Bernath 475 5753 with your ideas.

The reunion is scheduled for September 13 - 15, so mark those dates on your calendar!  (Yes, there is a CHS home game.) 

CHS Class of '58ers--Heads up!!

Sandy and Jan(et) are beginning to work on the 55th class reunion!  We now have the dates of the home football games and will plan around those.  We would be interested in your ideas for activities you would enjoy while here in Chelsea for the reunion. 

Thusfar, we have identified a trip to the football game; post game eats and drinks and Jim Grau's house; dinner somewhere.  Your ideas??

The dates available for the reunion are:  weekend of 8-30; 9-13; 9-27; or 10-4.  We'd like to "shoot for" 9-13.
